Hulbert Schools is in the middle of a medieval-themed book fair this week.

There are appropriate decorations including teachers in costumes, but one decoration in particular has a lot of students talking.

David Forrest usually builds motorcycles, but it's his smoke-breathing dragon that's getting lots of attention.

One day last spring he started welding on some scrap metal in his front yard and the dragon is the end result.

"It's more bulky than it is heavy," Forrest said.

It's mostly welded pieces of old 55-gallon drums and the skeleton is angle iron from old bed frames and there are other bits and pieces from yard sales and flea markets.

"The teeth are from an old sickle mower," he said.

The dragon got the attention of Candie Rankin the reading teacher at Hulbert. She said she knew the fair was medieval so she convinced Forrest to bring it to the school.

The kids are really into it; there's a naming contest among the classes.

The dragon will be named on Thursday evening at family night.
