Kids from 12 Green Country school districts are taking part in the third annual Aero Games Saturday in Pryor. The hands-on learning event was designed to help students master science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principals.

Google partnered with Rogers State University to host the games at the RSU-Pryor campus at MidAmerica Industrial Park.

Mike Wooten, operations manager for the Google data center in Mayes County said they want to inspire middle and high school students to enjoy and possibly choose a career path in those scientific fields.

"The Aero Games provide an opportunity for hands-on learning and mastery of STEM principles. We are excited to be a part of a community that plays such a big role in preparing students for these particular career paths," he said.

Competitions involved remote-controlled helicopters and other aerospace-related objects. Students flew everything from gliders to rockets, earning awards for their efforts.

RSU President Dr. Larry Rice said the university is committed to helping Oklahoma students excel in the "ever-changing technological environment."

"To help younger students develop and maintain an interest in STEM-related fields, we know that we have to present educational activities that are both fun and meaningful," he said.

"We're so honored that Google has been our partner in the Aero Games to help reach out to students in northeastern Oklahoma who might not otherwise be able to participate in events like this."
