Modelers and hobbyists showed off their model trains this weekend in Broken Arrow.

It's the second year local train clubs have set up their layouts to share their hobby with the public.

The Green Country Model Railroaders Association says its mission is two-fold, to promote the hobby and to promote safety around real railroads and crossings.

Modelers say today's children have something to compete for their attention over trains.

"One of the things that's sad today is there are not as many youth in the hobby as there was when I say I was a child, because trains were a big part of our culture,” Terry Smith, of the Green Country Model Railroaders Association, said. “Today, if it's got a screen that's what kids like to play with."

Railroaders said there's a resurgence of train traffic due to the rising cost of fuel for truck freight.
