ORU opened its baseball season at J.L. Johnson Stadium Friday afternoon against Memphis. The Golden Eagles defeated the Tigers, walking off the field with a 3-1 comeback victory. The game was one of a three-game set, in which the final two games will be played Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Golden Eagles took the field first, giving up a run in the top of the inning.

Lefty Logan Domenico led off for ORU, and struck out swinging at Caleb Wallingford's high heat on a 1-and-2 count. Chase Stafford stepped to the plate in his first-ever at bat for Oral Roberts, hitting a line single to start the Golden Eagles' scoring effort. The team fell short at the bottom of the inning, after Matt Brandy popped up and Audie Afenir fouled out.

ORU headed back to the dugout, after a quick three-up-three-down. Anthony Sequeira was first on base for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of two, after he was nailed in the wrist with a pitch. The Tigers finished the inning without allowing any runs, hits, or errors.

Oral Roberts had tightened up its defense since giving up the triple that resulted in the Tigers only score (Darien Tubbs), but needed to rattle the sticks in the bottom of three. After Dean Wilson grounded out to third and Derrian James flied out to center, Domenico lined one to the outfield for an ORU double. With the pressure on, Stafford hit an infield fly, making the third out.

The fourth inning was a quick in-and-out for both teams. By the top of the fifth, Wallingford had only given up one hit to ORU.

Memphis attempted a two-out rally, when Brandon Montgomery hit a double to left center. ORU pitcher Guillermo Trujillo then walked Zach Schritenthal. Tubbs proceeded to fly out, leaving his teammates on base.

The Golden Eagles managed to get runners on base, but couldn't bring them in. At this point, ORU was scoreless, with two hits and one error. The Tigers had one run, three hits and one error.

Chris Carrier rallied the sixth with a leadoff single for Memphis. He soon stole second on a wild pitch in the dirt. ORU shut down the Tigers' scoring efforts with two back-to-back strikeouts by Trujillo and an infield catch. Memphis quickly got three outs before the top of seven.

ORU finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh, when pinch hitter Rolando Martinez hit an RBI, (that brought in Sequeira from second). The game was now tied 1-1.

ORU made a pitching change in the top of the eighth, replacing Trujillo with Nathan Garza. Garzo started out well; he didn't allow any runs, and helped his team to a quick three outs.

Turning Point

The Golden Eagles took the lead at the bottom of the eighth, when Domenico was batted in by Afenir. The double down the right field line started a Golden Eagles' rally. The team quickly took a 3-1 lead on two-out base hits.

ORU held Memphis at the top of nine for a 3-1 win.

"They hit some hard balls and scored early, but we were able to hang in there," said ORU head coach Ryan Folmar on his team's win.
