A Green Country fire chief is recovering at home this afternoon, after breaking his spine on the job two weeks ago.

Bristow Chief David McSpadden was making repairs on a truck that hadn't been used in months when it exploded.

The blast damaged his spine, jaw and eye socket. He's out of the hospital, and has had stitches and staples removed.

His jaw will be wired shut for several more weeks.

McSpadden, a 31-year department veteran, said he's eager to get back to work, but no word on how soon that will be. He's vowed it will not be the final chapter in his career.

There has been a fund set up for donations to help the McSpadden family through the Bristow Firefighters Foundation at Community Bank in Bristow. Visit the foundation's Facebook page by clicking here or you can mail donations to: David McSpadden Benefit, P.O. Box 1020, Bristow, OK 74010.
