Wintry Week Ahead Starting with Sunday

A fairly lackluster winter is turning more interesting by the day as we enter a stretch of active weather combined with Arctic air. Starting with Sunday, strong north winds will usher in sub-freezing temperatures just as a weak upper-level wave spawns a few rounds of light snow over Oklahoma. Most of the moisture will stay to our west, but enough of it will sneak into Green Country to turn parts of it white yet again.

Starting around dawn on Sunday, a band of light snow is likely along the northernmost counties in Oklahoma.  This means areas between Tulsa and Bartlesville and as far east as Grove may see some snowflakes flying first thing in the morning.  Much of it will be dry and powdery, blowing around in the wind.  However, enough may fall to cause a dusting and some slick spots on roads.  A few light snow showers and flurries are possible during the day, but most of it will be light.  By afternoon, a more substantial band of snow, mixed with sleet and rain will set up along and south of I-40.  It's here where an inch or two of snow may quickly accumulate and cause some slick roads.  That should taper off by late evening.  All in all, Sunday's snow will be patchy and mostly on the light side, but it will be cold enough for some surfaces to become snow-covered and hazardous for travel.

Another round of light snow is possible Monday, moving in from the west.  The southern areas will once again be favored for the best chance of accumulating snow, but anywhere in eastern Oklahoma could see enough to whiten the ground up a bit further.
The other issue for the next two days will be the bitter cold air that settles into the region.  Temperatures won't warm out of the 20s on Sunday with wind chill values dropping into the teens and single digits.  Winds may gust up to 25 mph causing miserable outdoor conditions, especially if that's coupled with snow.

Temperatures moderate by Tuesday with a day or two to catch our breath between winter systems.  By Thursday, another Arctic front will come racing in, perhaps with some snow.  By the beginning of the weekend, yet another winter storm may be forming nearby.  We'll have more on that system as it gets closer.

Stay warm and be careful on the roads over the next few days!  Winter is surely not over yet.  Be sure to follow me on Twitter and like my page on Facebook for the latest updates!
