Firefighters said two dogs died after an east Tulsa duplex was damaged by fire early Tuesday.

Workers at a nursing home across the street saw the flames and ran over, knocking on doors to wake up anyone inside.

Tulsa Fire officials said the blaze started in a duplex in the 11000 block of East 14th Street South near Garnett just before 12:30 a.m. and spread quickly to the roof.

No one was in the duplex where firefighters believe the fire started, except for the two dogs. The residents of a connecting duplex were able to get out thanks to the nursing home employees.

Because of the damage on both sides, fire officials say the residents will not be able to move back in. The Red Cross was called to assist.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
