A man was fatally shot by Oklahoma City police officers after pointing a firearm at officers in the air and on the ground in southeast Oklahoma City, police said.

The shooting happened near S. Dimple Drive and SE 51 Street.

Shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday, police were called to a nearby apartment complex's parking lot.

Neighbors told police a middle aged man was trying to break into vehicles or steal a vehicle from the parking lot.

When officers got to the parking lot, the man ran away. While officers were chasing the man, police said he pointed a firearm at the police helicopter and pointed at officers on the ground, police Capt. Paco Balderrama said.

Two officers fired at the man. He was hit and died at the scene.

"It's crazy that somebody would be trying to do this on the Fourth," said Preston McClap, a man who told News 9 that he saw the whole incident.

Balderrama said it's unclear if one or both officers hit the suspect with gunfire. Neither officer was injured.
