The Tulsa Health Department suggests parents can avoid the back-to-school rush when it comes to immunizations by stopping by their clinics in July.

The department says there are no new immunization requirements for the 2015-2016 school year, but right now, their clinics are not that busy.

“Our clinics will be very busy as the first day of school approaches, which is why we recommend families have their child immunized now while there is little to no wait time,” said Priscilla Haynes, Tulsa Health Department division chief of community health.

Haynes says the demand for vaccines turns into a rush before school starts in August because of the booster shots that are due before children enter kindergarten.

Children transferring into Oklahoma schools from other states may need the hepatitis A vaccine. This vaccine is not required for all states; however, hepatitis A vaccine is required for all Oklahoma students in grades kindergarten through 12th.   Students entering the 7th grade must receive a Tdap booster.

Health officials say children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent or guardian and bring a copy of their current immunizations record to receive immunizations.

Childhood immunization clinics are available at:

  • James O. Goodwin Health Center at 5051 South 129th East Avenue
  • Central Regional Health Center at 315 South Utica
  • North Regional Health and Wellness Center at 5635 North Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
  • Collinsville Health Center at 1201 West Center
  • Sand Springs Health Center at 306 East Broadway
  • Bixby Health Center at 8120 East 126th Street
