The Stillwater Police Department is raffling off a custom painting in an effort to help raise money for the families of the victims in the OSU homecoming tragedy.

The raffle of the one-of-a-kind painting began on Wednesday.

“We evaluated our strengths, and since we have a talented artist on staff we knew he could do an awesome piece of art,” said Stillwater Police Lt. Dale Higgins.

Officer Trevor Meridith created the painting, which is on a heart-shaped frame that was designed and crafted by local carpenter Steve Axtell.

“I was inspired by the compassionate responses of the citizens who stepped up to care for victims as the first responders made their way to the scene. The courage, the selflessness and the determination from our residents was overwhelming,” said Meridith.

The painting has been given the unofficial name of “Pete’s Healing Heart” by some of the SPD officers.

Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 from officers who will be making the rounds to entertainment venues around the Stillwater area. Officers will be in areas around town beginning Friday, Nov. 6 at Downtown Stillwater’s Fridays, Food Trucks and Tunes event about 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Officers will also be at Eskimo Joe’s Saturday, Nov. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other locations will be shared on the Stillwater Police Facebook page.

“We chose to work with the Stillwater Medical Center because 100 percent of donations go directly to the families,” Higgins added.

The raffle drawing will be held Friday, Dec. 18. Details will be posted on the SPD Facebook page and on the City’s website at stillwater.org.

For more information or for questions about purchasing raffle tickets, contact Higgins at dhiggins@stillwater.org or by phone at (405)742-8323.
