Home surveillance video is helping police solve more and more crimes, much of it due to the advanced technology that can capture very clear and detailed images.

One victim, who owns a security company, said thanks to his surveillance video, he captured an image of the thief which helped put him behind bars.

Kevin Kallstrom said a burglar approached his midtown home in the middle of the night.

“The light outside was broken, and when I went to check it I realized we didn't have cameras anymore, so that tipped us off, and the last thing we saw was him taking it down," Kallstrom said.

Even though the thief took off with the camera, Kallstrom had it all recorded on a DVR system.

The burglars face was covered, but the camera picked up tattoos on his neck, and, days later, police arrested a suspect.

Surveillance cameras are solving more crimes as homeowners continue to invest.

“So, with the older camera systems it was grainy, you couldn't really see their face. With these three megapixel cameras, it's a very clear crisp picture," Logan Thompson, with Kazar Security explained.

The newest surveillance cameras have pan, tilt and zoom technology allowing you to follow an intruder standing on your property.

Kallstrom said, "You can do scheduling so it can have it move and rotate by actually log in on your phone and use the camera function as well."

You have access 24/7 if you have a smartphone, and everything in your home can be linked together - from the lights to the garage door, even the television remote.

You can get an email or text to alert you of motion outside, or if a door or window is opened.

"Just to make sure my wife and kids got home and everything is okay," Kallstrom said.

Many worry if you can access your information online, then so can hackers. Kallstrom said it can happen, just like thieves can steal any other information you put online.
