Ministry Provides Thanksgiving Feast For Tulsans In Need

Families in one north Tulsa neighborhood have full tummies, plenty of groceries and even warm coats, thanks to a local ministry.

As the rain came down, so did the gratitude for families at the Comanche Park Apartments in north Tulsa.

“It was really nice of these people to do something like this for people,” said resident Leece Deerinwater.

A free Thanksgiving dinner was served under tents outside the apartments, and dozens of low-income families who live there became one big family.

New Jerusalem Baptist Church Pastor Sean Jarrett said, “We believe in community, and this is the best way to serve - show the love of Jesus Christ by giving back to the community.”

Together, BrightSpot Mobile Family Services and New Jerusalem Baptist Church provided the meal, but not just for the day.

The group also sent families home with leftovers and grocery bags full of food, so children and their parents wouldn't have to wonder about where their next meal came from.

“A lot of the kids in Tulsa only get meals when they're in school, so we wanted to pass out a bag of groceries so they could have food over the Thanksgiving break as well,” said Heather Schilling with BrightSpot.

But the families didn't just fill up with food, the group brought a bus full winter clothes so children won't have worry about staying warm this winter.

Jarrett said, “We show thanks to God by giving back to our community.”

And those in the community are grateful for that goodness.

“Thank these people for doing all this,” said Deerinwater.
