OU Football: Perine, Mayfield Named Earl Campbell Semifinalists

Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine has been named a semifinalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

The award honors Texas legend Earl Campbell and is given to the nation’s offensive player of the year who meets the awards criteria. The player must have been born in the state of Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. The player must also exhibit integrity, performance, sportsmanship, and tenacity.

The award was also created to encourage student-athletes to succeed on and off the field while having the drive to overcome adversity in order to reach their goals.

In last week’s Bedlam matchup between the Sooners and the Cowboys, Perine tallied a carry in the 4th quarter that put him over 3,000 rushing yards for his career in only 472 attempts, making him the fastest among any running back in Stoops era. In all, he toted it 17 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns. 

Sooners QB Baker Mayfield is also on the list, along with Tulsa wide receiver Keyarris Garrett and Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington.

Mayfield is also up for the Heisman and a finalist for the Burlsworth Trophy. In OU's win over OSU, Mayfield threw for 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for 77 yards and a touchdown.
