Law enforcement agencies are searching for an escaped inmate who was last seen on work detail in Muskogee Tuesday morning.

U.S. Marshals believe someone picked up Douglas Wilson and drove him out of the area.

Department of Corrections records show this isn't Wilson's first time escaping prison, which has raised the question as to why he was allowed to work an hour and a half away from his prison cell.

Wilson was making a supervised delivery for DOC to the DHS office in Muskogee when a DOC spokesperson said Wilson went to get another box from the truck for delivery and simply walked off.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections does not consider Wilson a high security threat.

Wilson is less than two years into a ten year sentence at J.H. Lilley Correctional Facility for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and endangering others while eluding police.

He's also had several drug and burglary convictions.

But the DOC said they didn’t consider Wilson a high security threat, and the prison warden put him in a work detail.

Chief Deputy Brandon Caster with the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office said, "They'll qualify, they'll put them on work detail and let them do different things, and, occasionally, you'll get one that'll walk off."

DOC records show Wilson escaped from Muskogee Corrections Center in 1988 and from police custody at drug court in 2005.

A DOC spokesperson said, because those escapes were not from DOC custody they were not considered when determining Wilson's ability to work.

Caster said, "Just goes to show that he likes to run and he's done it again, and I'm sure we'll catch him again."

Caster said the escape has deterred resources.

"We do have to pull people from, you know, other jobs to concentrate on that until we get him back in custody," he said.

The DOC inspector general is joining the search, interviewing Wilson's friends and family.

DOC said Wilson has not had any complaints while in their custody and had good behavior.
