The FBI said Friday it's investigating the San Bernardino mass shooting as a terrorist act.

Speaking at a news conference, David Bowdich, Assistant Director in Charge of the Los Angeles FBI Office, said the FBI found evidence that Syed Farook, 28, and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, 27, planned the attack and then tried to cover their "digital" footprints. Investigators found cell phones believed to have been used by the couple. The FBI said the cell phones had been crushed, but the FBI said it was retrieving information from the phones.

Bowdich also responded to questions about how the media was allowed into the couple's apartment Friday morning. A crush of reporters and photojournalists forced its way into the apartment when the landlord pried the door open. Some of the reporters were shown walking through the apartment and looking through the couple's belongings live on the internet.

Bowdich said the FBI executed a search warrant last night at the apartment and then turned it back over to the landlord.

Malik posted a message on social media pledging allegiance to ISIS, Bowdich said. He would not reveal details of what kind of organizational or other help the couple received in the preparation for the attack, or the specific evidence that leads the FBI to believe it was a terrorist act. He stressed that the investigation is in the very early stages.

The FBI said it knows of no credible threat against the United States at this time.
