Public Service Company of Oklahoma says it's replacing thousands of digital smart meters in Tulsa because of a possible manufacturing defect.
In a letter, dated December 14, PSO said it plans to replace 25,000 smart meters in Tulsa immediately because the screens on the devices don’t work properly.
It says replacements are expected to be installed by February 4, 2016.
PSO said while the manufacturer is recalling the meters, it does not affect the operation or safety of the meters.
The utility reports it has installed 290,000 new meters in the Tulsa area and will begin meter replacements in Bartlesville in next month.
PSO spokesman Stan Whiteford said PSO statewide has replaced 382,000 meters and would finish work in western Oklahoma by the end of 2016.
