New video shows the crash between a Tulsa school bus and an SUV Tuesday. Police said the TPS bus hit the SUV after someone waved it into traffic.

Police said that people trying to be nice can be helping to cause some accidents - but they don't blame the waver, they blame the drivers who blindly follow directions from a stranger.

Tuesday’s crash was blamed on the driver who pulled in front of the bus. She crossed a lane of traffic into the path of the bus, but the driver of the SUV said it wasn't all her fault.

Police said crashes involving drivers waving other drivers across happen more often than you think.

The one Tuesday was on a highway off ramp that frequently backs up with traffic.

A driver was trying to get out of a parking lot and across traffic, so it's one of those places where a friendly wave can help out someone else.

Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley said, "It's all your responsibility, and I get it, I understand why people do it."

Ashley said he sees it all time - when people try to be nice and wave drivers across.

He said while it might seem rude to not take the offer, just don't take the offer without a clear view of what's coming.

"I'll wave back and say thank you, but you can go ahead, there's nothing wrong with that,” Ashley said. “I will acknowledge that I see that you're waving me to come on across traffic but thank you, you can go ahead because I don't want to take that chance."

The woman who was hit by the bus wasn't seriously hurt and no children were injured at all.

The bus only had minor damage but the woman in the SUV was ticketed - meaning she's responsible for all of the damage.

Ashley said, “It's not the individual who waved you through there, their fault, or the individual who came down the road and hit you or you hit them, it's going to be your fault.”

The driver's ticket, according to police, was for failing to yield to the bus, which had the right of way.
