When people fall on hard times, their greatest need is probably for food.

So the same would be true for their pets.

Rick Wells introduces us to the Tulsa animal control officers, who make sure the pets of Tulsa's homeless get enough to eat.

It's 8:30 on Wednesday morning and animal control officers Pete Theriot and Jeff Brown have just pulled into the parking lot at Iron Gate.

It seems that the people just keep coming.

“We hand out approximately 6,000 pounds a month,” Brown said.

Wednesday mornings here, and again Thursday evenings at Night Light near the Day Center for the Homeless.

“There's usually a line waiting for us when we get here..." Brown said.

They've been at this for two years. Between them they have more than 30 years as animal control officers.

They see what you and I see -- people living on the margins, homeless or struggling. And many have pets.

“Where the heck do they get the food for their dogs at?" Brown said.

So they started working on it and found some donors. The dog food comes in in 55 pound bags.

“What we do is break it all down and put it into gallon-sized Ziplock bags," a woman said.

They sometimes have leashes and collars and little jackets, and they pass out food at campsites when they find pets there.

"These guys help everybody they are our little saints... Saint Pete and Saint Jeff,” a person

Pretty soon I checked my watch and roughly 14 minutes, maybe less, and they were finished -- 650 pounds of pet food gone in a flash.

Nice work Saint Jeff and Saint Pete.
