Sanders Upsets Clinton, Takes Oklahoma

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders made a surprise win in the Oklahoma Democratic presidential primary election Super Tuesday. Sanders also notched wins in Colorado and his home state of Vermont.

Sanders received 52 percent of the votes cast in Oklahoma, or 174,054; Hilary Clinton ended with 42 percent or 139,338. 

According to our News On 6 exclusive poll, at one point, Clinton had a 35-point lead over Sanders. She ended the night with wins in Massachusetts and six other states as well as the American Samoa.

Election Results

In an attempt to win the battleground state, Sanders made two stops in Oklahoma – Tulsa on February 24 and OKC on February 28. He was also the first to buy TV time for the rare chance at a win in the south.

Hillary Clinton’s last Oklahoma stop was in December 2015, but her husband, and former president, Bill Clinton made stops in OKC and Tulsa on her behalf.

Many of the grassroots organizers in Oklahoma said it's great to see their hard work paying off. The chair of the Tulsa County Democratic Party, Jo Glenn, said they are ready to continue pushing forward as one.

"I'm hoping all of us come together now and support the nominee. And I'm not unrealistic, Oklahoma is not about to become a battleground state, but with Donald Trump, everything is possible, and we will be ready," Glenn said.

On the Republican side, Texas Senator Ted Cruz took Oklahoma and Texas. Cruz also won Iowa earlier this year.

Other Republicans walking away from Super Tuesday with victories include Donald Trump who won Arkansas, Massachusetts, Alabama, Virginia and Georgia.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio took his first win in Minnesota.
