A group of North Tulsa cheerleaders has something more to cheer about. The Tulsa Legacy Charter school team has been invited to a big cheerleading competition.

The members of the Tulsa Legacy Charter School Cheer Squad are little but they have big dreams. They hope to take these moves on the road to Virginia Beach for the U.S. final cheer competition. They qualified with their first place win at this year's jam fest national competition.

The coaches say they can't take all the credit.

"I’ll video record myself doing the cheer or the dance and the parents will go home and they'll watch it and mimic the moves and show their daughters how to do it," head coach Roshaunda Mclean said.

To make it to the competition, the team needs $22,000. It’s an astronomical amount for a school coping with state budget cuts. So the team is appealing to the public.

"We serve a 98 percent free and reduced lunch population, 25 percent special education and we are getting outcomes that compare some of the top schools in the district,” Charter School Executive Director Carlisha Williams said.

All of the cheerleaders on this team are in kindergarten or first grade, and they've only been at this for four months. But their coaches say their dedication is astonishing.

School representatives say despite the area's economic status, they want more for these young ladies.

"I want the girls to have everything that more affluent communities have and we can do that with the support of the community,” Mclean said.

The US final competition is May 5 through May 8.
