Man Accused Of Stabbing Savanna Clerk Previously Stabbed Firefighter

A man is in the Pittsburg County jail on a complaint of attempted first-degree murder.

Police say Larry Johnson attacked a Savanna gas station clerk with a knife, calling him a “terrorist.” Prosecutors said this is not Johnson's first attack.

Officers say Johnson bought gas at the Savanna Superette just after 9 p.m. on Monday. Then, they said he went inside and stabbed the gas station clerk in the lungs.

The gas station is right next to Savanna Schools. Students said, Tuesday morning, their teachers tried to keep them from panicking.

"They were just telling us it's not a big deal, not to worry about it," freshman Clayton McMahan said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is now looking into whether the stabbing was a hate crime.

Some wonder why Johnson wasn't already behind bars.

Creek County Prosecutors said, a year ago, Johnson stabbed Sapulpa firefighter Jon Paden Fleak during a medical call.

Fleak’s mother, Tami, said, "Luckily my son is young and agile and was able to turn rather quickly, and Mr. Johnson stabbed him in the arm instead of the heart."

Prosecutors charged Johnson with assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Charging documents say he had multiple drugs in his system, and records show Johnson's bond was set at $35,000, and he bonded out immediately.

Tami said she believes justice was not served, and allowed Johnson to attack again less than a year later.

"In my mind, he shouldn't have been out,” she said. “In my mind, he tried to kill a first responder and, truthfully, nothing has happened from it. It just kind of languished in the court system."

Savanna's police chief said Johnson will likely get a mental health evaluation.

As for the victim, he is expected to be OK and should be released from the hospital this week.
