Golfers from all over the country are in Owasso this Memorial Day at the Patriot Cup Invitational. It benefits Folds of Honor, which awards scholarships to the families of fallen or disabled service members.

One woman said she's been given $10,000 dollars to help pay for her education. And golfers were there helping Folds of Honor meet a goal to help others like her.

A 21-ball salute kicked off the Patriot Cup before more than 100 golfers hit the course.

Country singer Lee Brice said, "Been a golfer for a while, but just getting the rust out today."

The golfers were there for people like scholarship recipient Colleen Katzenberger.

"When you lose your husband at 26, everything you plan on is kind of, done," Katzenberger said.

Her husband, Staff Sargent Jeremy A. Katzenberger, was serving as an army ranger on his eighth deployment when he was killed in Afghanistan.

Now, she's earning her Masters at Rockhurst University in Kansas City and is one of more than 10,000 scholarship recipients across the country.

"After I lost my husband, I just never really felt like I could go back to nursing and do it as well as I once did. And so, after a few years of healing, I decided to go back to school to be a high school biology teacher," Katzenberger said.

Her son, Everett, was just a baby when his dad died in 2011; but thanks to Folds of Honor, he has a scholarship too, when he's ready for college.

It's not just golfers invested in the effort to help, there were people there with other talents, too. Brice is having a benefit concert to help and has one song in mind for the holiday.

"I Drive Your Truck will be pretty intently for Memorial Day weekend, and for the day, and for this whole event. It always has been, so it's a really special song for us," he said.

And that is music to Colleen Katzenberger's ears.

"There's nothing more touching than when people actually care to remember Memorial Day and treat it like more than just a barbecue," she said.

As the Patriot Cup wraps up, the next part of the event will be in Tulsa at the Hard Rock Hotel Casino for Brice's concert at 8:00 p.m.

All proceeds from the performance will go toward Folds of Honor.
