The man behind the Route 66 Marathon and the Center of the Universe Festival is on a long road to recovery after suffering a brain injury.

Chris Lieberman fell from a ladder in March. While he’s getting the care he needs in Atlanta, his friends here in Tulsa are planning an event at the Hunt Club to help Lieberman and his family.

Lieberman is the man behind the Center of the Universe Festival and the Route 66 Marathon. His friends call him a Tulsa visionary and credit his events for attracting downtown development.

Putting on the marathon and the music festival are a full-time job, but that’s not what Lieberman’s friends and family are focused on right now.

Lieberman suffered a traumatic brain injury after he fell from a ladder. He’s been on the mend ever since.

Recovery can take a long time, and the only place to receive rehab for his injury is at a specialty hospital in Atlanta.

"And I'm just so thankful Chris has had the opportunity to go to the best rehab center that there is and heal and progress," said Lieberman’s girlfriend, Kim Hann.

With loved ones by his side in Atlanta, Lieberman’s friends in Tulsa want to give back and raise money to help with medical and housing costs.

Event organizer Scott Carr said, "Chris has been such a great friend to the Tulsa community, there's been a lot of people in the Tulsa community excited to give back to him."

"We would do anything to help Chris anyway we could," said Hunt Club owner, Marry Ellen Slape.

Eight bands are donating their time and their talents starting and performing at the “LieberFund Benefit Concert.”

"We couldn't be more humbled, overjoyed, just by the love and support that we've received from the community," Hann said.

The $10 cover charge at the door will go to Lieberman's recovery fund.

The Hunt Club is located at 224 North Main Street in Tulsa.

Here is a lineup of bands that will be participating:

  • Eric Himan 2:00 p.m.
  • Paul Benjaman 3:00 p.m.
  • FM Pilots 4:00 p.m.
  • Groucho 5:00 p.m.
  • The Bourgeois 6:00 p.m.
  • Speakeasy 7:00 p.m.
  • Brothers Moore 8:00 p.m.
  • Nicnos 9:00 p.m.

Additional donations toward Lieberman's recovery can be made here.
