Pittsburg County leaders attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Emergency Operations Center Friday.

Emergency Management Director Kevin Enloe said the new facility will be state-of-the-art and should be open next spring.

The main part of the facility will be 8,700 square feet and will replace the current facility, which is a Cold War-era fallout bunker in the basement of the sheriff's office.

Enloe said the new center was paid for by money left over after the county paid off other bond issues ten years early.

He said his team needs more room and better technology, plus the state designated the department a regional emergency operations agency last year and the new center will meet that requirement.
