Sand Springs goes back to school August 23, and it's the first year for the district's superintendent. Superintendent Sherry Durkee is replacing longtime Lloyd Snow, longtime Sand Springs superintendent, who retired earlier this year.

Durkee planned to visit Angus Valley Elementary during her first day in the new role.

Sand Springs isn't immune to the state budget crisis, and along with eliminating several positions, the administration announced that they would be cutting down bus schedules. But just last week, the district said they're bringing back bus routes and driver positions they had eliminated - thanks to a reallocation of money and a donation from Tulsa Teachers Credit Union.

Another new initiative for this school year Durkee said she's excited about is a Science, Math, Engineering and Technology program that will help students develop critical thinking skills.
