A former youth pastor who admitted to sending lewd texts to teens will serve just six months in jail.

Even the judge seemed surprised by the recommendation, but it was one that the victims’ families agreed to.

Brian Burchfield said nothing as he was led away in cuffs to begin serving his six month sentence.

The former youth pastor at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee admitted to sending the sexually charged texts to four teenage boys. Investigators think Burchfield was grooming the boys for sex.

District Attorney Richard Smothermon said he believes the sentence is fair.

"There had been no physical touching. Certainly he was in the grooming process and leading towards that but it had not yet gotten to that point,” Smothermon said.

News 9 asked should parents be concerned that the former pastor will be free in just six months?

"Hopefully, we caught his actions in time and with the appropriate amount of corrections that being jail, convicted felon, sex offender, he won’t have access to children in the future," Smothermon said.

Burchfield's attorney said his client is remorseful.

"He’s very sorry about what happened, for the pain he caused all those people and his own family,” attorney John Coyle said. "It’s a tragedy all the way around."

As part of the sentence, Burchfield will have to register as a sex offender.
