TU Wins Season Opener Against San Jose State To Start 2016 Campaign
TULSA, Oklahoma - Tulsa football opened its second year under Head Coach Philip Montgomery with a 45-10 win over San Jose State.
TU took the field wearing white jerseys for the first time at home since 1977 and got on the board first with a 38-yard TD run by D’Angelo Brewer to set the tone.
The Spartans answered with a 59-yard touchdown later in the quarter to tie the game 7-7. But kicker Redford Jones helped TU regain the lead with a 34-yarder with 2:46 before the second quarter.
Brewer kept TU’s momentum going with another score to elevate the Golden Hurricane 16-7. Jesse Brubaker fed off that energy and made his way to the end zone on a pick-six.
Entering the second quarter with a 24-7 lead, the Golden Hurricane looked good offensively, converting possessions and were making plays on defense.
An 11-yard reception by Justin Hobbs brought the score to 31-7 as Tulsa led the way.
Scores from the offense, defense and special teams helped TU carry a 38-7 advantage into halftime.
Brewer opened the second half just as hot as he did the first, tallying another touchdown to make it a 45-7 ball game.
With the show Tulsa was putting on, dominating on both sides of the ball, you could tell the Montgomery era was only going to see more progression.
TU wrapped with a 45-10 win to start its 2016 campaign.
