OHP To Escort Fallen Sheriff Home To Oilton

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will be escorting fallen Sheriff Master Deputy Brandon Collins to his burial site Saturday in Oilton.

Collins, originally from Oilton, was serving as the Master Deputy of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in Olathe, Kansas, when he was killed in the line of duty September 11, 2016. 

Collins was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind while he conducted a traffic stop on northbound U.S. 69, near West 143rd Street in Overland Park, Kansas, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is about 20 miles southwest of Kansas City.

He had re-entered his patrol car when a pickup truck struck it from behind, causing it to burst into flames. The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene on foot but was arrested a short time later, JCSO stated.

The OHP will be meeting the Kansas Highway Patrol at the state line Saturday as they escort Collins to the Highland Cemetery in Oilton. The JCSO will assist in transporting Collins and final honors will include all Law Enforcement Services.

Services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the outpouring of support and the many heartfelt thoughts and prayers our family has received since our tragic loss. Brandon was a devoted and caring husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. Brandon's love and compassion for his family, friends, and the community he served will never be forgotten,” Collins’ family said in a written statement.

Collins was born in Drumright and grew up in Oilton. He graduated from Glencoe High School and attended Northern Oklahoma College and later Oklahoma State University.

Collins began his law enforcement career with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. He joined the JCSO in 1995, where he served for 21 years.

Collins was 44. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
