There weren't too many bright spots in Oklahoma's 21-point loss to Ohio State last Saturday, but one encouraging takeaway was the performance of running back Joe Mixon.

The redshirt sophomore rushed for 78 yards on nine attempts in the loss, while adding 15 yards receiving and a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

“Joe Mixon had another outstanding game, both offense and on the kickoff return," OU head coach Bob Stoops said.

Mixon has been lightning in a bottle this season, rushing for 235 total yards while showing up big against both Houston and Ohio State. Coach Stoops admitted on Monday that Mixon needs to be even more involved in the OU offense.

“It’s fair to say, I think we have to be cognizant and keep track of opportunities he gets for sure," Stoops said. "He’s exceptional when you do target him or give him the opportunity so, yes.”

Mixon has grown not only as a player, but Coach Stoops said that Mixon has matured as well.

“It’s like all young guys in three years, change drastically," Stoops said. "Joe has done that as well, he’s really matured well, he’s been an excellent student, he’s never on the list for anything, he does everything you want him to do and been a great teammate.

"In the locker room he’s one of the more popular guys because he’s a friend to everybody.”

Mixon is currently second on the team in carries with 29 compared to Samaje Perine's 33, but Mixon gets a lot of targets in the passing game as well.
