An Interstate 40 traffic stop Monday morning led to the discovery of 299 pounds of marijuana.

A member of the Central Oklahoma Metro Interdiction Team — or COMIT — pulled over a Ford pickup with a camper shell about 1:30 a.m. at I-40 and Meridian Avenue.

Police say the license tag on the back of the truck was unreadable, because it had dark plastic covering it.

The two men in the pickup said they were traveling from Phoenix, Arizona, to Warsaw, Missouri.

However, the men gave different reasons for their trip.  Rodney Bonner, 49, and Karl Ensign, 52, were in custody soon after.

A certified K-9 found 11 bales of marijuana in the back of the pickup, police said.

Oklahoma City police officer Travis Vernier said COMIT officers are on the lookout for more than illegal drugs.

“It’s human trafficking, it’s also guns, any kind of stolen property, so criminals use the interstate too. … They use the interstate to drive around and commit their deeds,” he said.

Bonner and Ensign remain the Oklahoma County jail on $25,000 bond each.
