Rain Expected Across NE Oklahoma This Weekend

The next two days will continue to be above the seasonal average with highs today in the lower 90s and highs Saturday in the upper 80s.   A strong upper level storm system will be nearing the state this weekend and will bring rain and storms back to Oklahoma including the northeastern section of the state.   As the clouds and rain-cooled air invades the area, temperatures will drop to below the seasonal average Sunday through early next week.   Some pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with this system.  

The low level moisture will be streaming back across the area today and Saturday morning setting the stage for the rain and storms that will follow.   As this process begins more clouds will move into the area by this afternoon and evening along with south winds at 10 to 20 mph. Some data suggest there may be a few spotty showers developing as the moisture surges back across the area later today.  This chance will remain very low, but not zero.     We’ll experience heat index values today in the mid-90s and the lower 90s Saturday.

Tomorrow morning, we can’t rule out a few scattered storms across eastern OK with morning lows in the lower 70s and mostly cloudy conditions.   By later in the afternoon more scattered storms will become likely as a large upper level trough begins ejecting into the central and northern high plains.   Even more storms will develop later Saturday evening across western and central OK and migrate into eastern OK overnight through Sunday.   We may have multiple rounds of precipitation during this period with Sunday morning lows in the upper 60s and highs in the mid-70s.

The outcome of the forecast early next week may continue to undergo changes.   The data continue to offer varying solutions regarding the timing and positioning some synoptic features.   The bottom line:   we’ll need to keep some low pops for Monday and will monitor the data for additional pops for Tuesday.   The temperatures will start in the upper 50s Monday morning and may stay in the upper 60s if the precipitation remains entrenched across the area.   A few breaks or lower coverage would allow highs in the lower 70s.   We’ll stick with some lower 70s Monday and Tuesday until our confidence in a wetter and cooler solution increases.

In summary, we’ll continue to see warm weather today and Saturday before the cooler air arrives Sunday into next week.   Friday night football games will be dry yet warm for almost all areas but I can’t rule out a stray shower for one or two locations.
