While work continues on the Navy's USS Tulsa being built in Mobile, Alabama, work is complete on a scale model of the ship.

Wednesday at the Tulsa Historical Society unveiled a 1-700th scale model of the USS Tulsa, or the LCS 16 until it’s officially christened early next year, built by the Tulsa Ship Modelers Society.

The USS Tulsa Commissioning Committee is hosting an event at the Historical Society to thank the ship modelers and give folks a peek at what Tulsa’s newest namesake will look like.

"The ship is more than halfway done," said USS Tulsa Commissioning Committee co-chair, Steve Gerkin.

Gerkin’s job is to host and plan events leading up to the eventual commissioning of the new ship.

Former mayor Kathy Taylor is the ship sponsor.

This'll be the third USS Tulsa.

The new USS Tulsa will be sleek and fast; Gerkin said it’ll be extremely stable can travel nearly 60 miles per hour.

The christening date is tentatively set for the third week of January, then, there's a year of testing and the new USS Tulsa should be in service by early 2018.

The model will be on display at the Tulsa Historical Society along with memorabilia from other Navy ships that bore the name Tulsa.
