The Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC) plans to shut down more disposal wells and scale back the production volume of others, as a response to increased earthquake activity in the northeastern part of the state, specifically the Pawnee area.

In total, 38 Arbuckle disposal wells that are under OCC’s jurisdiction are affected -- 15 of which were already shut in following the Sept. 3 quake; a 5.8 magnitude quake now the largest in Oklahoma history. Four new disposal wells will be shut down and 10 others will have to reduce volume.

In addition to the Arbuckle wells, there are 32 EPA-managed wells in Osage County that are affected, six of which will have to reduce volume 25 percent from their last 30-day average, while 26 will have to limit volume to the last 30-day average.

The latest action plan was put together jointly by the OCC, the Oklahoma Geological Survey and the Environmental Protection Agency. Officials say the fault orientation of this quake was different from the September quake. So, while they think the two events are probably related, they felt this latest quake required a separate action.
