Tulsa Public School Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist talked with 6 In The Morning Wednesday about State Question 779, which Oklahoma voters rejected on Tuesday.

The measure would have would have provided a $5,000 raise for teachers and funding for education through a new statewide one-cent sales tax.

Dr. Gist says she believes the state question didn't pass because people either think that it wasn't enough of a raise or that there was a better way to do come up with the raise.

"I don't believe that the people of Oklahoma did this because they do not support our teachers, and I think that's so important for our teachers to hear.  I would ask anyone to please, reach out to your own child's teacher, teachers, teachers you know, neighbors.  Please, give them the message that you appreciate what they do, that we need them and they need to hear that," said Dr. Deborah Gist.
