With much cooler temperatures expected next week, a lot of people will be clicking on their furnaces for the winter season which if not maintained can lead to carbon monoxide leaks or dangerous blowouts.

Experts say you need to make sure your furnace is in working order at least once a year. They also say if you haven't used it since last winter, there are several things that could cause issues.

Around this time of year, an Airco technician inspects furnaces in about eight homes a day.  One of their common tasks includes cleaning out any dirt or debris that found its way inside.

They also check to make sure your furnace and thermostat are communicating correctly.

But one of the most important things they do is check the gas pressure.

If it's to light that means your furnace will not be putting out enough heat and it will constantly run, wasting your money.

If the gas pressure is too high then experts say your heating system could fail in a dangerous way, potentially starting a fire.

"The system is going to heat up very quickly and it's also going to do a lot of damage to the heat exchanger,” explained Airco service tech Brian McKay. “Then, you are going to have problems with blowouts and cracks."

Heating experts stress that you do not attempt to self-check your furnace or start disassembling it in any way because you could electrocute yourself or damage parts making it inoperable.
