Residents of a Sand Springs home safely made it out of a home that had caught fire Thursday morning.

Sand Springs firefighters responded to the fire call at about 8:16 a.m. in the 900 block of North Roosevelt.

City of Sand Springs Fire Chief Mike Wood said all residents of the house safely escaped the home and some other people on the scene helped rescue a cat through a window before firefighters arrived on the scene.

Wood said one cat did die in the fire before it was able to be rescued.

The house is a split-level home and that one family lived downstairs and one family lived upstairs, Wood said.

The fire started in the upstairs kitchen, but SSFD doesn't know the cause yet, he said.

Wood said the fire had pretty much snuffed itself out by the time firefighters arrived, but that the top story has smoke and heat damage throughout.

The below-freezing temperatures also created an obstacle for the firefighters as the water would freeze as soon as it touched the ground, Wood said.

"It makes it tough to work in these conditions, but we do the best we can," Wood said.

Wood said the top floor is uninhabitable, but that SSFD is still assessing if the residents on the bottom story are able to go back into the home.
