Oklahoma transportation officials say crews have cleared snow and sleet from most parts of the state, but cautioned that some roadways remain hazardous.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said Sunday that crews are treating isolated slick spots in the eastern part of the state. The agency cautioned drivers to use extra caution traveling on highways in northeastern Oklahoma because they still could be slick.

"Crews are also treating isolated slick spots in northeastern Oklahoma. Craig, Ottawa, Mayes and Delaware counties still have more widespread slick highways and drivers should be very cautious traveling in this area," an update states.

The agency says crews were clearing snow from highways Sunday morning in western and northwestern Oklahoma and on road shoulders in the central part of the state.  A blast of arctic air on Saturday brought snow, sleet and bitterly cold temperatures to the state.

The National Weather Service says temperatures weren't expected to make it out of the upper teens or 20s on Sunday throughout Oklahoma.

ODOT issued the following winter weather driving tips:

  • Stay at least 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
  • Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
  • Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
