The Tulsa Police Department swore in its newest — and youngest — officer Tuesday.

Dozens of people watched 5-year-old Aaliyah Alexander, who has advanced kidney cancer, read her oath of office and receive her uniform and badge in a ceremony in the 1600 block of West 59th Street.

The police department learned of Alexander, who recently returned home from St. Jude Hospital, and her desire to become a policewoman.

Mayor G.T. Bynum presented Alexander with a certificate designating her as an honorary police officer, according to a news release.

She also  met officers — canine and human. She rode in a police car and got a tour of the police helicopter.

"We were able to make [her] wish come true," Captain Thomas Bell said in a news release.
