There's a big clean up and recovery effort happening right now in the Florida Keys which took a direct hit from Hurricane Irma.

Susannah Wells is a Key West resident who evacuated to Tulsa. She obeyed the mandatory evacuation and came to stay with her mom.

She said she could feel the tension rising on the island, as Irma approached, so she made the decision early to get out of the storm's path.  Wells says she didn't bring much with her - just clothes and some sentimental pieces of jewelry.

The rest stayed in her apartment - photo albums and and other valuables put away on high shelves.

Wells says the evacuation has been emotional. Now she's waiting to see what, if anything is left.

"You find peace knowing, maybe my apartment is completely flooded - maybe, you know, things are strewn about - and wind gusts.  I don't know at this point, the condition of my home, but you sorta have to make peace with starting over," said Susannah Wells, Key West evacuee.

Wells says, in the meantime, she's trying to stay patient and hopes the news she gets from back home is good.
