It's flu season in Oklahoma. Since September 1st, state health officials report 13 flu cases across Oklahoma.

State health officials say to help avoid becoming one of those cases in the weeks ahead, you should consider getting a flu shot.

They are available at county health departments across the state.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health says the current flu season typically runs through May of 2018, and one of the best ways to prevent getting sick is by getting the vaccine.

It also helps with "herd immunity," by cutting down on the number of cases that can spread to the most vulnerable population - the elderly, the very young and those with chronic health problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months of age and older receive the vaccine each each.

Other ways to cut down on your chances of getting the influenza virus:

  • Stay home from work, school, and other public places if you are ill.
  • Make “respiratory hygiene” a  habit, including use of tissues to cover coughs and sneezes, then disposing of them and performing hand
  • hygiene immediately. When tissues are not readily available, use your sleeve, never your hands.
  • Frequent hand hygiene using soap and water, or alcohol-based products such as hand gels when hands are not visibly soiled.

Wednesday morning, the 6 In The Morning crew took time to get their flu shots while they were on the air.
