Bixby Public Schools' Superintendent confirms the district is investigating reports that a student was hurt during a recent football practice.

Superintendent Rob Miller says the athlete was punished with extra exercises for arriving late to practice, leading to blisters to the boy's hands.

Bixby Superintendent Rob Miller statement:

"I am still getting information on this event. It involved a student who received consequences for arriving late to practice. The remedy involved doing additional physical exercises on the football field.

From what I have been told, it was not excessive and the temperature of the turf was not overly high. Nonetheless, the student developed some blistering on his hands (I am waiting to see if we or the parent(s) has a picture). I do not know if it was caused by friction or heat, though I suspect the former. He did not report the injury to his coaches or training staff.

Later that evening during a seven-on-seven camp, he went to catch a pass and slid across the turf again, causing the blister(s) to open. Again, I am told he did not report the injury to staff. The injury to the palm of his hands caused him to miss several days of baseball practice.

We are waiting for a return call from the boy's father and a member of the athletic staff."
