With six seats up for a vote, candidates for Tulsa City Council are in the final stretch before election day.

Mayor G.T. Bynum says seven years ago he had to beg people to get out and run for city council, but things are very different this in 2018.

“This year it is across the board,” said Mayor Bynum.  “I’ve never seen a group of people where we have so many good candidates in so many races.”

In the race for District 4, the seat being left by councilor Blake Ewing, the interest is especially high.  Ewing says he couldn’t be more pleased with the four candidates ready to take his seat.

“Midtown and downtown Tulsa can do no wrong with who they elect in District 4,” stated Ewing.  “I hope the rest of town is just as lucky.”

Looking back on his time on the city council, Ewing says “the reward for me has been about having physical impact year to year.  I like it.  I like that I got to make my mark on the city.”

Mayor Bynum says this year is especially important because of a positive shift in dynamic between councilors and the mayor’s office, and a heavier focus on national and international competition.

“We’ve been focused on making the City the best it can be,” said Bynum.  “You do that and it brings a whole host of new and pretty exciting challenges to be focused on.”

In particular, says Bynum, developing the riverfront, focusing on education, and overall capital improvement.

Elections are on Tuesday, August 28th.
