Law enforcement honors a Sapulpa man for bravery after he survives a car fire that claimed the life of another person.

Sapulpa police officers and Creek County deputies say their goal was to make Rex Reid feel special.

Reid survived a car fire after police say his caretaker had a diabetic episode, went off the road, and the motor caught the grass on fire.  The car went up in flames.  Reid was able to make it out, but his caretaker of 10 years did not.

“He was shaking.  He was trying to get his meds and he just missed the house turn where I stay,” said Reid.

After the crash, Reid was struggling with survivor’s guilt.

“Today’s ceremony, hopefully, will help him,” said Sapulpa Police Lieutenant Terry Wiggs.  “You know, he had some guilt and was having a hard time and thought maybe he was in some sort of trouble.”

To lift his spirits, Sapulpa police officers and Creek County deputies teamed up to make Tuesday all about Reid.

They wanted to make sure he knows he didn’t do anything wrong and they are glad he survived.

Friends joined Reid to help him celebrate his special day, then it was time for him to have a little bit of fun.

Reid got to sit in a deputy’s car, push some buttons, and talk on the intercom.

“I think this is something he will really enjoy and appreciate,” said Lieutenant Troy Foreman.  “Getting recognized and such with this certificate we are going to give him.”
