Jenks Police Make Arrest After Cyclist Hit By Car
JENKS, Oklahoma - A driver has been arrested after Jenks police say he hit a cyclist near 91st and Elwood and drove away.
18-year-old Luis Benitez left Jenks for the Tulsa County Jail. Police say he left the scene of the accident after striking the victim. Jenks Police say the victim was with a group of cyclists as they were riding east on 91st. Benitez was heading west and turned in front of the group.
"He said that he didn't have a chance to stop. He just heard someone yell "No, no, no!" and by the time he heard the last "No," he already hit the side of the car," said Jenks Police Sgt. Melissa Brown.
The victim Kenneth Smith told police that he flew through the air with his bike and landed in the grass. Kenneth will have surgery on his arm and have to overcome other physical challenges, too.
"He's had to have some glue put on to his eye to get his eyelid back together. And he's got bumps and bruises everywhere," said Sgt. Brown.
During his recovery, Kenneth's cyclist friends are collecting gift cards to help him.
"One of the best things about Kenneth is everybody just loves to ride with him. Because he's always happy about riding and he just does it because he loves it," said Zach Pfaff.
Zach is the owner of Spoke House Bicycles in Tulsa, where cyclists are getting ready to head out on a ride. They're also working to get the word out about how to help the victim in this crash.
"It's gonna be difficult for him to go to the grocery store, get around town, that sort of stuff. So if he can just order some food with a gift card or something and get it delivered, that would be a lot easier for him and his family," said Pfaff.
And they're looking forward to the day he can get back on two wheels.
"He's still gonna be able to get back on the bike and have fun at the beginning of next season"
If you'd like to help Smith, you can drop off a gift card at the 21st and Boston Spoke House location during normal store hours. Spoke House is open 10 to 6 on weekdays 11to 5 on Saturdays, and 11 to 3 on Sunday.
