Clash Of Titans: Broken Arrow, Jenks Start Off District Play
BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma - The threat of weather is getting the district season started early for high school football.
We’re starting off with the clash of titans, Jenks and Broken Arrow, a matchup of the top two teams in the state in 6A.
Rolling in Keith Riggs' first year on the sideline, Jenks is averaging 30 points a game with an offense led by third-year starting quarterback Ian Corwin. The team is also coming off a 27-10 win over Union in the Backyard Bowl two weeks ago.
"I think the kids were ready to go. Had it been a normal week where we had a game last week, it might have been a little different. But it's a big game and both teams have shown they play well in big games. You love to have these types of opportunities. It probably wouldn't have mattered when we played, either way it'd turn out to be a good game," Riggs said.
Meanwhile, Broken Arrow is the top team in the state and has been dominant in three wins.
Senior running back Noah Cortes and a veteran offensive line makes them one of the most physical teams around, with Tate Robards and Quintevin Cherry providing a two-headed attack at quarterback.
"They were ready to go. It's been a bye-week. We're ready. We didn't have any more bumps or bruises to heal up. We're healthy. We knew it was not going to rain on Thursday. It's Oklahoma, we don't know for sure 100 percent what's going to happen on Friday, but we know there's a pretty big chance of rain and there's not chance tonight, so let's get the game and let's get it played," said Broken Arrow head coach David Alexander.
Jenks and Broken Arrow are kicking off the district season a day early but those aren’t the only programs playing Thursday - Booker T. hosts Bartlesville, East Central is at Memorial, Hilldale is at Central, and Inola is taking on Berryhill.
