Drexel Academy In Tulsa Converts To Online Classes

Shondra Marzett walked into Drexel Academy as a parent on Monday and walked out a teacher.

That's because the school went completely online, so she will have to help her son at home with his assignments. Marzett says she’s grateful her 6-year-old son can keep learning.

“Drexel is an amazing school, and they have done an excellent job to bring homework and schoolwork to the children to meet their needs,” Drexel told News On 6. 

Marzett picked up all the materials from her son’s first-grade teacher, Atia West. West's classroom should have been filled with students, but Monday there were only empty desks.

“I miss them a lot. However, I think having classes online is a great idea. Now, I don’t feel like everything I instilled in them this year is getting lost because of the virus,” Atia said. 

On Monday, students were given a packet of assignments as well as an individual state-of-the-art laptop called a 'chrome book' so they can submit all their assignments online.

Also, teachers want to remind their students, if they think they can get away with not doing your assignments to think again because each teacher is monitoring their students daily from at home. 

President Tim Newton says they got the chrome books last year through donations. He says the program they use created personalized plans for each student based on their learning level.

“So now we can give them to our parents to continue our education with our boys and girls in a time when we are not able to come together but we can be together virtually,” Newton explained. 

Newton says the school will be online for as long as they need to. They will also be sending out information in the next week and coming weeks on their Facebook page with updates and education tips for parents.
