With schools across the state shutdown, teachers are finding creative ways to cheer their students up from a safe distance.

Teachers at Banner Schools near El Reno drove separately to kids’ homes in hopes of brightening their day. Teachers stayed in their cars and students waved from the curbs.

“I just hope they know how much we absolutely love them, and we miss them so much,” fourth grade teacher Dawn Gomez said.

Like many schools, Banner would have been returning from spring break Monday. Instead, classes are out across the state until at least April 3.

“I just hope they know that we love them outside of school,” kindergarten teacher Melissa Keys said. “We think about them and they know that just because we can’t meet them today, that they are still in our hearts and that’s the bottom line for any teacher.”

In Moore, Oakridge Elementary is planning a similar teacher parade Tuesday and Briarwood Elementary on Wednesday.

In Piedmont, teachers will visit Strone Ridge Farms, Carlisle Crossing, Savannah Estates, The Grand, Ponderosa, Willow Bend, Blue Ridge and Chapel Creek on Wednesday. The following day, they’ll visit Monterrey, Vizcaya, Emerald Point, Coyote Springs and Circle V Ranch neighborhoods.

“As a teacher, it’s really hard because your students become like your kids,” Gomez said.
