Red Dirt Diaries: Head Of Security Is Museum's Marketing Guru

The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum is providing a needed distraction at this time.

It's not one of its exhibits, but an employee who still has to come to work.

“I’m having a ball,” said Tim, who is the Director of Security.

For the past week and half, Tim has been posting pictures with comical captions and information about the museum.

Using Tim was the marketing team’s plan to keep the museum interesting while it remains closed.

“We knew security would be left in the building no matter what. So, we made Tim the Director of Security the face of our social media,” said Director of Museum Marketing Seth Spillman.

Tim wears a cowboy hat and has a handlebar mustache.  He looks like he’s straight from one of the paintings at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

“The mustache and hat don’t hurt” said Spillman who helps Tim with his daily social media posts.

Tim posts his encounters with the museum’s famous visitors, like Sam Elliott and Keven Costner.

He has lighthearted posts about trying to catch the characters Toy Story exhibit moving when he’s not looking.  He jokes about not understanding the selfie locations around the museum.

Tim is new to twitter and spells out “hashtag” in his posts.

But what started as something silly has turned into something special.

Many famous people are retweeting the Oklahoman who grew up in Jones.

Tim, who uses the #HashtagTheCowboy, was trending this week on twitter.

Before Tim’s posts a week and a half ago, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum had roughly 9,000 followers on twitter.

As of Friday, that number had grown to more than 251,000 followers.

“Absolutely crazy. This is so unreal. I think I’m still in denial,” said Tim who’s worked at the museum for more than 8 years.

“We have started joking that we are going to need a carboard cut out of Tim up front,” said Spillman.

“This is a very unusual time for everyone. Just to bring a little positivity into people’s lives while people are cooped up. It’s important. We need that,” said Tim.
