A 17-year-old boy is dead after a crash on Highway 20 near 177th East Avenue early Wednesday. Owasso Public Schools confirmed that the driver who was killed was an Owasso student.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said the 17-year-old driver was headed north on 177th East Avenue when he didn't stop at the stop sign at Highway 20 and was hit by a utility truck.
The teenage driver died. Another 17-year-old from Collinsville who was also in the car was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.
OHP said the crashed happened around 6:20 a.m. October 9, when it was still dark. Troopers said what was so heartbreaking about the crash was the family coming out to the scene where their loved one had just been killed.
"It is the most difficult thing that we have to deal with on a daily basis," said Trooper Leonard McMillan, Oklahoma Highway Patrol. "But unfortunately we were able to make notification on scene which makes it a little more difficult for everybody around.
Owasso Public Schools confirmed the driver was high school junior Shea Powell. OPS issued a release saying their school family was heartbroken at the news of the student's death.
"District counselors will be available for students and staff at Owasso High School on both campuses today and as long as needed," said Owasso Schools Director of Communications Jordan Korphage.
The driver of the utility truck, 57-year-old David Kielhorn, was treated and released from the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing. OHP spoke with News On 6 about the incident, watch below.
