The Wagoner County Sheriff's Office believes Del Rio and Ree were in the Houston area preparing to cross the border into Mexico before they were tracked down.
Several days after the homicide, the Sheriff's Office had received a tip about where the weapon used in the crime may be located. K-9 Edo and his handler searched in the Broken Arrow area and found the weapon that is believed to have been used in the murder.
"I thought there's no way after four days five days and four nights that this knife has been laying out in a field the dog is ever gonna be able to smell it I was wrong the dog went right to it," said Sheriff Elliot.
The Wagoner County Sheriff's Office said after that they learned through tips and leads that the suspects were in the Houston area. That information was given to the US Marshals, who did surveillance then arrested them.
"Very difficult case to work. I've got brilliant investigators brilliant deputies, I've got a brilliant 911 center. It took everyone working as a team to make this happen and the credit all to not me, but to everybody who put this case together,” said Sheriff Chris Elliot.
Ree was arrested for first-degree murder and Del Rio was arrested for accessory after the fact. They both are facing extradition to Wagoner County.
